Madden NFL '06 Developer: Tiburon Publisher: Electronic Arts MSRP: $49.99 Systems: GC, PS2, Xbox It was quite a dilemma trying to decide if I should write about Madden '06 this week or not. On the one hand, since Madden is the only game coming out this week, if I decided to ignore it there would be a big hole in the newspaper where the Weekly Releases should go. On the other, I despise Madden. If not for Madden Football and Electronic Arts unparalleled greed, I would be getting an early preview of Alex Smith and my up-and-coming 49ers right now in the vastly supperior NFL2K series. Instead, EA bought exclusive rights to the extremely valuable NFL license during the off-season and I am left creating rookies in NFL2K5 for the next five years - when the exclusivity contract finally runs out and other developers are allowed to make their own NFL games once more. For those interested, this $50 update adds a new Quarterback Vision system. Essentially, you have to manually move the head of your quarterback to look towards the WR you wish to throw to or, if you're really fancy, look off the safety to allow your guy to get open. An interesting idea that isn't too fun in practice. Get the innovation while it's hot; I can't imagine EA will continue to add features with no legal competition on the market.
